About Be The Buffalo

Character education for the whole family

Our Story iconOur Story

In late 2025, my youngest son was struggling.

He has severe ADHD and low self-esteem, and he needed more one-on-one support than he was getting. As I started looking more closely at social-emotional learning content, I also started paying attention to what was available for families teaching at home.

A lot of what I found was designed for classrooms of 25, not a family of four.

Some resources were too worksheet-heavy. Some required school accounts and technology that did not make sense at home. Some were so loosely structured that parents had to build the curriculum themselves. And most treated character education like an afterthought—something that happens naturally instead of something you teach intentionally.

My background is in application development, so I naturally started thinking about the problem from a builder's point of view.

What would character education look like if it was built for families, not just schools?

What if the parent did not need a teaching degree to lead the lesson?

What if it connected stories, conversation, music, and hands-on activities into something a family could do together in 10–15 minutes?

That became Be The Buffalo.

It is a K–5 character education and social-emotional learning platform built for parent-led lessons. Parents can pull up a story, song, discussion prompt, activity, or printable and use it right away with their children—no prep, no training, no complicated setup.

The technology is there to support the family conversation, not take it over.

Why "Be The Buffalo"?

Be The Buffalo comes from a simple metaphor: when a storm approaches, buffalo turn toward it instead of running away.

For children, that image is easy to remember.

Being the buffalo does not mean pretending hard things are easy. It means learning how to face hard moments with courage, support, responsibility, and honesty.

That idea runs through the whole program. Children are not just told to "make good choices." They see characters struggle, pause, repair, try again, ask for help, and learn what it means to move through the storm.

SEL + Character Education

Be The Buffalo bridges social-emotional learning and character education.

SEL gives children the "how":

Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Character education gives children the "what":

Kindness, honesty, courage, resilience, responsibility, flexibility, empathy, and more.

Children need both. They need the skills to manage emotions and relationships, but they also need clear language around the kind of people they are learning to become.

No Student Accounts

Be The Buffalo does not require your children to create accounts or log in.

That was intentional.

There is already a lot of concern from parents about how much screen time children get. I did not want to build a platform that required every child to sit in front of a device, create a profile, or have personal information stored just to learn about kindness and self-control.

Character education is human.

Children practice these skills through conversation, listening, stories, disagreement, repair, empathy, and being together as a family. If every child is sitting alone on a screen, we lose the most important part.

Be The Buffalo is built for the parent. You lead the lesson. Your family does the thinking together.

Story-Driven Learning

Children remember stories, characters, songs, and moments.

Each lesson uses relatable buffalo characters and real-life situations to help your children talk about things like frustration, friendship, patience, bravery, honesty, responsibility, and problem-solving.

The story gives children enough distance to talk honestly. Instead of asking, "Why did you do that?" you can ask, "What do you think Benny was feeling?" or "What could Bella try next?"

That makes the conversation safer, more natural, and more useful—especially between parent and child.

Literacy Skills Built In

Be The Buffalo supports character education while also reinforcing literacy skills like listening comprehension, vocabulary, discussion, sequencing, retelling, writing, and reflection—skills your children practice naturally during every lesson.

Safety Conversations

Safety and character education are connected. When children learn courage, responsibility, decision-making, boundaries, speaking up, and asking for help, they are also building skills that support personal safety—at home and in the community.

Fully Bilingual

Every story, lesson, and resource includes Spanish with a simple toggle. Perfect for bilingual families, heritage language learners, or adding language exposure to your homeschool day. No separate materials needed.

Our Philosophy

Technology should support your family's conversations, not replace them.

Be The Buffalo uses technology to deliver stories, songs, and activities that give your family something meaningful to talk about together.

The screen is not the lesson. You, your children, the stories, the songs, and the conversations are the lesson.
